En este artículo se analiza la recreación que Enrique Gómez Carrillo hace de Guatemala, a través de las primeras crónicas que escribe de adolescente en los periódicos de su país. Esta imagen se complementa con la que evoca en el primer tomo de su autobiografía, El despertar del alma, treinta años después. A partir de una mirada impresionista, el cronista retoma aquellas cualidades que pueden catapultar a su ciudad natal hacia la modernidad: el desarrollo económico, la educación y el comercio, por mencionar algunas. Además, en los textos analizados, se contrasta la imagen de la ciudad y el campo, como muestra de las grandes contradicciones por las que atraviesa Guatemala justo antes del cambio de siglo.
This article analyzes the recreation that Enrique Gómez Carrillo makes of Guatemala, through the first chronicles he writes as a teenager in the newspapers of his country. This image is complemented by the one he evokes in the first volume of his autobiography, The awakening of the soul, thirty years later. From an impressionist perspective, the chronicler takes up those qualities that can catapult his native city into modernity: economic development, education and commerce, to name a few. Furthermore, in the texts analyzed, the image of the city and the country is contrasted, as an example of the great contradictions that Guatemala is going through just before the turn of the century.
