En 1972, en la introducción a su antología seminal El nuevo periodismo, Tom Wolfe postuló con brillante desfachatez que esta combinación de temas y apego a los datos como el mejor periodismo, tono y estructura narrativa como en las grandes novelas e inmersión lindante con la más acuciosa observación etnográfica no era tan solo similar o comparable a la mejor literatura de su tiempo: era la forma más avanzada y estimulante de escritura literaria, y que reemplazaría a la novela como manifestación escrita del espíritu de la época. Con igual optimismo desafiante, en 2012 Jorge Carrión llamó a su antología de periodismo narrativo hispanoamericano Mejor que ficción. Entrados ya en la tercera década del siglo XXI, la lectura atenta de los artículos de este dossier muestra que ambos tenían razón. Y también que estaban equivocados.
In 1972, in the introduction to his seminal anthology The New Journalism, Tom Wolfe posited with brilliant brazenness that this combination of themes and attachment to data as the best journalism, tone and narrative structure as in the great novels and immersion bordering on the most Thorough ethnographic observation was not only similar or comparable to the best literature of its time: it was the most advanced and stimulating form of literary writing, and it would replace the novel as a written manifestation of the spirit of the age. With equal defiant optimism, in 2012 Jorge Carrión called his anthology of Spanish-American narrative journalism Mejor que ficción. Now into the third decade of the 21st century, a careful reading of the articles in this dossier shows that both were right. And also that they were wrong.
